I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and to share my transformative experience as an exchange student. It is with immense pleasure that I acknowledge the unwavering support of the University of Baguio, particularly the School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management. As the renowned travel writer Paul Theroux once said, "Most travel, and certainly the rewarding kind, involves depending on the kindness of strangers, putting yourself into the hands of people you don’t know and trusting them with your life." Our journey was brimming with uncertainties, yet it has left a remarkable mark on our lives. The two-month exchange student experience passed in a blur, like a fleeting moment in time. The rapidity of it all was astonishing, and yet, this short span bestowed upon us an unimaginable experience that still feels almost unbelievable. How can this be? The answer lies in the care and nurturing provided by Khon Kaen University, specifically the College of Local Administration.
Khon Kaen University became our sanctuary, exceeding all expectations. It offered us not just a roof over our heads, but also safety, security, comfort, convenience, and peace for the entire two months. This institution provided us with a life bursting with vibrant colors and daily excitement. With Khon Kaen University, a dream that we once held in our hearts materialized into reality. Within Khon Kaen University, within the nurturing arms of COLA, we found not only a place to lay our heads but also a community that became our refuge — a community that enveloped us in its embrace, fostering a sense of safety, belonging, and serenity.
The College of Local Administration at Khon Kaen University proved to be our steadfast support system. Whenever the need arose, they were just a call away, extending a helping hand without hesitation. They fostered a sense of belonging, inviting us to numerous events, such as Freshmen Day, which I will forever cherish. Our hearts rejoice during COLA CONNEXT 2023, an event that brought us immeasurable joy. As we undertook our own endeavor, COLAUB: Linguistic Youth, their dedication was unwavering, guaranteeing its success from beginning to fruition. We are also grateful to them for providing us with teachers who were aligned with our subjects, and for going the extra mile to source educators from various faculties. It is noteworthy that the COLA International Students Day was an event designed specifically for international students—a testament to their commitment to fostering inclusivity.
Beyond the ordinary, Khon Kaen University went the extra mile to facilitate a cross-border trip to Laos, providing us with an opportunity to explore the unfamiliar. Every endeavor we undertook with the College of Local Administration came with complimentary transportation, accommodation, meals, and the genuine care of the staff. They granted us a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will undoubtedly guide us towards greater heights. Through their actions, they became our temporary guardians, caring for us as though we were their own children.
I am eternally indebted to the University of Baguio for allowing me to be part of the Khon Kaen University College of Local Administration. This experience has shown me the boundless kindness that strangers can bestow upon those striving for personal growth. It brings to mind the words of Bob Kerry: "Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change."
Looking ahead, I implore future exchange programs to consider extending the duration to four to six months. Such a timeframe not only benefits the participating institutions but also allows students to fully immerse themselves in a new culture, fostering profound connections and personal growth.
