Unleashing Artistic Excellence: Journey of the Special Performing Arts Student Organization

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Long story short it all started with a vision …

Pamela Eileen Mae Consul, once an exceptional performer in the UB Graces Dance Troupe and Sanglaw Dance Company during her college days, to a diligent staff member of the School of Hospitality and International Tourism Management (SIHTM) dean’s office, and today, a passionate and committed adviser to the newly established student organization of the school – The Special Performing Arts Student Organization. Assisting her in this endeavor are two highly talented instructors — Ms. Desiree Anne Olimpo, a former Sanglaw Dance Troupe member, and Ms. Leah Mae Gabudao, a renowned music enthusiast. Their unwavering dedication, inspiration, and enthusiasm have prompted them to initiate a student organization that nurtures and showcases the talents, skills, and discipline of the SIHTM students. They firmly believe that students' talents can empower them to succeed and excel in their chosen careers, granting them a competitive edge in the industry.

The Birth and Growth of the Special Performing Arts Student Organization

The Special Performing Arts (SPA) took its first steps in February 2020 and officially gained registration status in October 2022 under the leadership of its inaugural Officer in Charge in 2020 , Mr. Karl Fianza, following the presidency of Mr. Robin Atijera in 2022. The organization initially faced challenges due to the pandemic, making it difficult to conduct screenings and auditions. However, in 2022, as the School of IHTM embraced hybrid and flexible learning approaches, a window of opportunity opened for the organization to expand its reach. By combining face-to-face and virtual auditions, the SIHTM Special Performing Arts successfully attracted nearly 50 talented individuals during its first screening. Subsequently, with screenings held every semester, the organization experienced continuous growth.

A Platform for Success

The organization has thrived by allowing students to participate in significant events: SIHTM Hospitality and Culinary Showdown 2022, Launching of Life Academy, SIHTM Excellence Award 2023, Social Graces 2023, 9th Tripartite Collaboration, Mr. and Ms. SIHTM and Tribute to Graduating Students, Parents and Faculty Members. In just a few months since gaining official recognition, they achieved the honor of being recognized as the Top Performing Student Organization for 1st Semester SY 2022 - 2023. Moreover, their adviser, Ms. Pamela Eileen Mae Consul, received accolades as the Top Performing Student Organization Adviser last February 17, 2023 during the SIHTM Excellence Award 2023.

A New Era of Leadership

Currently, the organization is under the capable guidance of its new President, Ms. Everly Jesslei Kheiyth Quela. Her focus remains steadfast on cultivating growth and productivity, diligently working towards the attainment of the organization's objectives.

The SIHTM Special Performing Arts has evolved into a dynamic force within the School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management, providing students with invaluable opportunities for growth and development. Through the steadfast support of their dedicated advisers, the members’ exceptional talents, skills, and discipline have been nurtured, enabling them to shine in their chosen fields. As they forge ahead under the leadership of Ms. Quela, the organization is poised to continue its remarkable journey, creating a lasting impact on the lives of the students and the wider community.
